when your in the lobby you can hit the activator (home) and it changes it to a public however the only way you can play in the public match is by inviting friends so you will need a party already in your lobby

I don't get how this helps. Why don't you just back out and start a new public match?

Because it can make you host and you can get all your friends in one public match
