Before updating, make sure you get priiloader and make a NAND backup, that way if your wii gets bricked you will have a way to unbrick it.

In the event that it asks you to update, if it is possible, cancle the update. If this is not possible, but is required to take further action in your wii usage, update after you get that NAND. If you are bricked, follow mauifrogs guide (I think that's who wrote it) on how to unbrick your wii, or ask D3MON or Jester at Disturbedcore.com and they can help (I say ask them there because there more active there then here, but feel free to try and contact them here).

@Generatorz, Use the power and reset buttons or a GC controller to select what you want to do. For a NAND backup, you will want to go to the far right button (I'm pretty sure, but I haven't done this in forever) and then select the option with the picture of the wii with an arrow pointing to an SD card.

All it does in uninstall any ciOS that you have installed on your console and you'll have to re-install it. Other than that, it doesn't do anything if you update through the disc channel. I would know because I tried to brick my Wii on purpose to use my NAND backup, but all it did was uninstall ciOS.
