What the hell are you doing with Chrome OS? LOL. That's just a giant web browser.

A desktop linux distribution is pretty much useless for anything but web browsing, music playing, and video watching. You need to know how to use the terminal (command line) to install and configure most things, and there's lack of support from mainstream software vendors (so no Photoshop, etc.). About the only advantage is its lack of viruses and the fact that it's free.

It depends on what you want to do with linux. It has several advantages over your average Windows OS. Linux is for the more technical savvy people. It can be better for penetration testing and developing programs which will work better across multiple OS's in my experience. Although it has many ups and downs.

Get #! if you want to test Linux out.

It's a Debian distro like Ubuntu (the "average" Linux distro), so you'll be able to install most software through .deb instead of just through terminal.

Even though terminal give you that "im a 1337 haxor" type feeling, but installing through .deb packages will help from you somehow misusing the su/sudo command which could cause something to go wrong.

Do not get Ubuntu though, that shit is meant for netbooks now, desktop is fucked to hell and Compiz always messes up because of it.
