    you can use the polygonal tool, it doesn't really matter, But elliptical is good for that curved gloss shape

    Default Glossy Look

    It all depends on what the image is. You may want to go with something simple like a gloss that goes straight across, or something more complicated like a multilayered gloss. Just look at my profile area on the left and you'll see images with many different types of gloss.

    With that said, I can't tell exactly what to do unless I see the image you're trying to gloss. What I can tell you though is a basic "gloss" is nothing more than a white image with its opacity lowered, if that helps any.

    Maybe I'll make a guide.
