Default How to color clipping masks

Kay. I just barely figured out how to partially work clipping masks, but say I wanted to put splatter over a render. I paint splatter on layer a, and clip it on to layer b (below it). The clip is successful, but the splatters are just white, the color I painted them. Is there any fancy coloring or something I can do to them? I was looking at this tut:

Color the layer you set as a mask? You should be able to do so.

You can use any image as a mask too.

Ah, I figured it out by putting the render on top of the clipping mask, and setting the render to pin light so that it would color the splats. So:

Black = render green = splats. I used the renders colors to blend the splats.
