    Thanks, yeah I guess it is a texture but I said material because Autodesks 'Material Editor' so that's why haha!

    Usually it's referred to as texture. Like in video games, the grass that you see on the ground is a texture placed on a 3D object (they use pixel shading to make it look more realistic in modern video games). A good example of this would be Minecraft. The entire game would just be indistinguishable 3D blocks if it weren't for the textures.
