Thread: Earth Day.

So today's Earth Day, a day dedicated to events designed to promote ecological friendliness. The tradition was started in 1970, and has lasted for 43 years now. The original 1970 one was focused on the USA primarily, but Denis Hayes took the event international in 1990, organizing events for 141 nations. Today it is celebrated in 192 countries, and coordinated by the nonprofit organization Earth Day Network.
What are you all's thoughts on Earth Day? Personally, I spent most of the day out in the sun assisting in the Special Olympics event at my school. Today's also my birthday, by the way.

Our Earth Day started on Friday. With my school we went to a place here on the island of Kauai called "The Base", well that's what I call it xD. where the Navy's and Army people are. There we cleaned the beach which was so beautiful and nice ocean water. The sand was pure white and it was so clean! Not saying everywhere else isn't but you know what I mean :P. Not much trash were left there besides bottle caps and some plastic stuff. It was a really good experience to have because their were a couple kids from our school, another school and the Navy's helping around clean the beach and it was great. But HOT at the same time. We got to eat fruits, donuts and drink some juice though :P. & Happy B-Day ToxicJew! .

Simon, that's great, but honestly the small plastic things can be the most harmful. Plastic gets into the ocean and dissolves, and it fills the ocean so much in parts per million that it begins to line the stomachs of organisms, killing them slowly. These days it's nearly impossible to examine a sample of ocean water and not find some dissolved plastic in it.
But still, great that you cleaned what you could. And thanks, it was good.

Edit: oh shit, wrong thread somehow?
Oh well. I'll just change this to an earth thing; nitrates are bad. Don't use fertilizers. They get into the ocean through runoff and destroy the calcium-based shells of producers in the ocean (producers that sustain the ocean's oxygen content) subsequently damaging the ocean population and as a direct result the human population.
