Go to My Computer, right click on the hard drive, and hit format.

Try in disk management. Right click on my computer and hit "Manage" then hit "Disk Management" on the bottom left.

What are you planning on using it for on the PS3? I mean I have my 500gb external loaded with movies and music, and all I had to do was plug it into the console. After that I'd hover over videos or music, hit triangle, and I selected an option related to "explore" and it pulled up everything I had on there.

I think if you plug it in, it should give you the option to format it. Try it.

Make sure you have NOTHING on it, back em' up.
