The flow could be better, render looks distorted. Nice job though, keep at it!

On topic, not bad for a first dude, the only problem is the size of the signature. Normal size is usually 250 x 450. 7/10, KIU, .

I guess it's alright for your first, I'm not a big smudger but I think you need to give your smudges more texture. Try pushing in then pull the same spot out, but don't smudge over anything you've already smudged.

Wow, nice job for a first ! Even I couldn't do it that clean when I first started smudging.
The flow of this looked good until the bottom left. You started to curve it which in this case you didn't need.
See how you smudged the little arm gear into the background? Do that to the top right shoulder and his triceps, but not too much.
Also, try to either smudge those black spots away, or make a new layer, grab your hard brush tool, and draw a few lines on the dark spots and smudge it. Remember, when you're smudging, don't rush through it.
One last thing, make a new layer, go to Image>Apply Image, then go to Filter>Sharpen>Sharpen, and if it's too sharp, lower the opacity on the applied image layer (this makes things stand out more). This is good though man .
Now that you got the hang of what smudging is, try messing with the settings of the smudge tool it's self, or find some decent smudge brushes. As for the light source you're talking about. It's good to have a white light source AND a desired color you want. Just set it to soft light and lower the opacity. KIU !

Oh yeah for my smudge strength mine is set to 80 if you want to try that. I found that that's the best number for me. I agree with Jrod with the brushes, you can't never have enough.
