Google: Good or Bad?
Today in English class, part of it was spent towards preparing an argument for a debate. The debate is about Wal-Mart. Is it good or bad? I'm in the middle on this topic not going to go into why.
Well my teacher and I were chatting and I told her that Google is just like Wal-Mart, it was a quick comparison that made complete sense in my head and I used it to kind of straighten out my thoughts, if that makes sense.
She of course asked why. I told her that if Google tells us to jump, we jump; but why? Think about this. 420 million+ people use Gmail today. Over 2 billion searches are made per day. Yes, I did research for those numbers also.
This may seem somewhat large but you're thinking, "Who cares? They can't become a monopoly when they're just a search engine."
You are very wrong, they're much more than just a search engine. What is the definition of a monopoly? The dictionary definition is "The exclusive possession or control of the supply or trade in a commodity or service."
Now saying that, let's sum up the service as technology. How many products does Google provide daily?
YouTube is owned by Google, obviously. There's over 4 billion videos watched daily. (Yes, again researched this.)
Android, 800 million+ use this OS on their phones. (Also researched this.)
Those are only two examples with numbers.
They also own...
Google Crisis Response
Google Mail (Gmail)
And so much more. Here's a full list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Google_products
My point is, Google says jump people jump. If Google was to shut down everything for a day, there would be a heck of a lot of people that would be lost that day and everything would go wrong for them.
This is something I have been thinking about.
Yes, Google provides a lot of good and them existing has changed a lot of lives. Some would consider Google a monopoly.
What do you think though? Feel free to answer!
(By the way, I'm putting this on Facebook in case anyone saw this on there too)

They aren't a monopoly, they have competitors. Yahoo, Bing, Babylon, ect.

Also, throwing this out. Do you ever hear someone say, "Let's Yahoo it!" or, "Let's Bing it!" No, you always hear, "Let's Google it!"
Just throwing that out there.

Cause google chose a name that rings.
Besides they wouldn't be able to do whatever they wanted. Monopolies are illegal. The goal is to become as close to a monopoly as possible without being one

Monopolies are allowed in certain markets where they are hard to get into. I am sure starting something like google would take up a lot of resources. Plus they don't really buy people out or try to control the price of the market so i don't see how that could be considered monopoly. Could be something called a natural monopoly.Google has copyrights and patents while other people can't use the technology. Happens all the time. You just have to consider the start up cost for someone to compete and maintain something like google. Very hard to do.

How can I express my feelnigs more eloquently than, "DUH."
It's a company; Google's out to make money, just like every other company. Eliminating the market is part of that. I'm not defending them or saying its right, but it's not like you've stumbled upon something profound and conspiratorial here. Everyone knows that; it's a massive corporation, what else would you expect?

2) They aren't trying to become a monopoly. They're just expanding, though it does seem to look like IMO that they're trying to become, as you said, as close to one as possible.

It's not a monopoly. I like Google. But Google plus is gay as fuck. I use Bing as well though so if they decided to shut down I would have Bing. But Google does own lots of things.
