The most commonly used controller is the wired xbox 360 controller.

Mics: If it connects usb it most likely will work.

It also depends on the game. If the game us made by sony, you'll definitely be unable to use an Xbox controller. There are many programs you can download that make controllers compatible btw.

Most games on Steam are now becoming compatible with controllers. Most games recognize the Xbox controller because Xbox and Windows go hand in hand, hence the reason you don't have to get 3rd party software to use the controller. Unless, of course, the game is not compatible with the controller then you have to use a 3rd party software that picks up the controller to map out the buttons.
Now, if you're on Windows I would suggest an Xbox 360 controllers, mainly because the Microsoft website already has stuff built for it.
If you have a PS3 controller, that's a different route.

There's two choices here. You can get wired or wireless. A common misconception with the wireless controllers is the plug-n-play kit. The charging kit. Those transfer power, not data. To use a wireless controller, you need the receiver.
Here's a quick Amazon search for it.
The prices, as you can see, range, but it's worth the buy IMO if you already have a wireless controller. I've had mine for over a year and still no issues.
Then of course you have the wired controller. Here's another Amazon search for it.
So what it comes down to is if you want wired or not.

Also, the links for the drivers and such for the Xbox 360 controllers.
    Wired
    Wireless

3rd Party Software I've used when controllers aren't compatible.
Xpadder (of course I have a cracked version, they may still be charging for it)

Little tip, most people have trouble getting things to work right first time. I did myself. Just don't say, "oh well" and move on. I personally YouTubed the issue I was having. Which to find out, it was a common issue with Windows 7 64-bit, if I remember correctly.

That's no entirely true. You can use the same idea for Office. Why would it be on Mac when it's made by Microsoft? Because money is money to them. Most games, no matter the company, are cross compatible.

^ This is 100% Correct. I'de be willing to sell you one for 5 bucks, or go to amazon buy a new one for 10. they are good for everything.
