MIT Society of Physics Students receives honorable mention, named 'distinguished chap
The MIT chapter of the national Society of Physics Students (SPS) — a student program of the American Institute of Physics (AIP) — has been awarded an honorable mention and named a Distinguised SPS Chapter for the 2012-2013 academic year by the AIP. The dual honor recognized the "depth and breadth of SPS activities" and "level of student engagement" of the MIT chapter.
Affiliated with the national physics honor society Sigma Pi Sigma, the SPS was created to support the professional development of physics students in "beyond-the-classroom" skills such as leadership, effective communication of scholarly work, networking and outreach.
MIT SPS activities, led by a dynamic group of students, include luncheons with weekly physics colloquia speakers; physics demo classes for local high school students; GRE practice sessions; senior advice night talks on UROPs and graduate school admissions; and community favorite, the annual Physics Rock Concert.
